Position Report Overview

The Position Report is one of the most commonly used reports in GrainWorx. It is accessed directly from the Reports menu and is frequently used by traders, front office, and sometimes back office staff to understand overall grain exposure across contracts, inventory, and futures.
This report provides a detailed, interactive view of your positions by commodity, market zone, shipment month, and contract type, helping you manage risk and maintain balanced exposure.

Opening the Position Report & Filters

When you open the Position Report, the first thing you see is a filter window. These filters control what data appears in the report and allow you to tailor it to your needs.

Commodity Selection

You can select one or multiple commodities.
Commodities can be configured as grain or non-grain in the Commodities setup.
Standard grain commodities typically include:
- Corn
- Milo
- Oats
- Wheat
- Soybeans

Interval Settings

Interval Type: Typically left as Months (recommended for Position Reports).
Other interval types are generally not relevant for this report.
Interval Length: Usually one month at a time is sufficient.

Start and End Dates

Start Date:

Dates in the past are usually not meaningful for position analysis.
Even starting earlier in the current month is often unnecessary.
You can use a future start date to see how positions would look if pushed forward.

End Date:

Automatically calculated based on how many columns the report can display.

Additional Filters

You can filter by:

One or multiple Market Zones
Individual Customers
Specific Contract Numbers
A specific Office or All Offices
States

Note on State Filtering:
The State field is based on the location of ownership transfer, not physical movement:

FOB (Freight on Board): Ownership transfers at the origin location.
Delivered: Ownership transfers when the load is delivered to the destination.

Saving Filter Templates

The Position Report allows you to save filter configurations:

Enter your desired filter values and checkbox settings.
Enter a name for the filter.
Click Save once it becomes available.

This allows you to reuse common report setups quickly in the future.

Filter Options & Checkboxes

Display Controls

Hide Zero Totals
Hides market zones where all values are zero.
Don’t Show Zero Commodities
Excludes commodities with no open contracts, inventory, or futures.
Only Grain Commodities
Shows only commodities flagged as grain.
Show Subtotal Months
After several future months, the report:
- Subtotals those months
- Displays a “Beyond” total instead of rolling everything into the final column
Show Details
Displays:
- Open purchase contract balances
- Open sale contract balances
- Net difference for each market zone
- Display Elevators**
  Shows elevator inventory balances, which roll into market zone exposure.
Remember Checkbox Settings
Saves your checkbox selections so they persist the next time you open the report.

Running the Report

Once filters are set, click OK to generate the report.

Commodity Grouping

If multiple commodities are selected, results are grouped by commodity and sorted alphabetically.

Understanding the Report Layout

Market Zones & Inventory

Elevator inventory appears first and is assigned to a market zone.
Inventory rolls into the overall position exposure for that zone.

Shipment Months

Columns represent shipment months.
The current month always includes:
- Any open balances from past months
For example, older November contracts will roll into December if still open.

Interactive Drill-Down

The report is interactive:
- When your cursor changes from an arrow to a hand, you can click the number.
- Clicking a value shows exactly which contracts make up that number.
This allows traders to quickly trace balances back to individual contracts and shipments.

Report Refresh Behavior

The Position Report does not update automatically.
If you change a contract (for example, increasing quantity):
- You must close and rerun the report to see updated values.

Detail Rows Explained

When Show Details is enabled:

Top row: Open purchase contract balances
Second row: Open sale contract balances
Below the line: Net difference

Example:

A 30,000 bushel sale contract may be split across:
- 10 loads in January
- 10 loads in February
- 10 loads in March
  Each shipment month column reflects its portion of the total.

Totals & Future Visibility

A Total column summarizes all months.
If elevators are hidden:
- More future months can be displayed.
Subtotals appear if enabled, with a “Beyond” total for longer-term positions.

Non-Hedgeable & Risk-Monitoring Sections

Below the main position totals, the report shows categories that are not yet hedgeable, but still important to monitor:

HTA (Hedge to Arrive)

Contracts without a futures price established.
Not yet part of hedge exposure.

Held Tickets

Grain tickets entered but not applied to a contract.
Represent exposure risk.

NPE (No Price Established)

Contracts with:
- No futures price
- No basis price
Basis generally represents expected freight from point A to point B.

Futures & Exposure Management

Total Exposure

Shows overall exposure across all priced contracts.
Futures contracts are 5,000 bushels each.
To estimate the number of futures:
- Divide the bushel exposure by 5,000.

Example:

A −140,000 bushel exposure ≈ 28 futures contracts short.
Buying futures can bring exposure closer to zero.

Risk Management Practices

The goal is typically to keep exposure as close to zero as possible.
Larger organizations:
- Often have a central hedge manager monitoring exposure.
Smaller organizations:
- Traders usually manage their own futures directly.

Futures Summary (Final Page per Commodity)

The last page for each commodity provides futures-specific details:

Long Futures (purchased futures)
Short Futures (sold futures)
Net Futures Position
Purchase and sale contracts netted together
Overall futures position displayed clearly
